First time San Jose, soccer and more!

                                         Day 45, martes 28 agosto 2012 21:40
My first exam, 100% score!
Tuesdays are not my very days in school, here that means that they are nice though. I had religion for the first time, yes after 6 weeks in this school I have had religion for the first time, I didn’t have gymnastics yet as well. But religion, the subject I thought I would least like is pretty cool. We did all these games to makes us feel better, like everybody had to write something on a paper on your back, and you have to write on theirs and later you read what people wrote about you, I liked it J also because my classmates wrote cool things J.
Furthermore Tuesday is a lot of waiting because there’s so much time in between the classes, but I always get hungry while waiting, but I can keep control of my eating habitits pretty good. Also I made an exam today, social studies.. I was really bad at it. But at english I get my exam back, I got all the points, and 100% score so I had a little moment of fame, but the level of english is not so high here.
In the evening I watched soccer, my team LIGA plays for the central american champions league. Here there is every day a soccer matxch and they are really good in making comercial for it. But also the there’s a lot of comercial during the game, like the commentator saying: GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL ‘mac donalds’ GOLAZA DE LIGA, FANTASTICOO!
Also I searched for a waterpolo team today, I found some pretty close to my village, like 1 hour with bus if a bus goes there, so now I only have to get in contact with them.
Tomorrow I go to San José with all the dutchies to do something at the ambassade, but it’s especially cool to be with just dutch people again and to talk dutch!

                                     Day 46, miercoles 29 agosto 2012 22:28
San Joseeeee
Yeaaa today I went to San José for the first time, besides camp, and just driving through. I took an early bus and at San José Carolina from EF picked me up and all the other dutchies already were there. It was pretty weird to speak dutch again! We drove to th ambassede and there we filled out 1 form and then we were done. But we didn’t want to go home directly so we went to Carolina’s house and drank some starfruit juice and talked about the exchange and stuff, it was good to talk to somebody from EF in english, so I totally understand and be able to say everything.
After this we went to a little mall with a supermarket where you could buy international stuff, they sold Nutella but I didn’t buy it since it was €4,50 for 300 grams.  After this we had to go home but we didn’t really want to because it was so early and we were in San José. So Romeyn and I walked through San José a little bit but there was not so much to do. So after some searching we found the bus back. Saturday I will go to Puntarenas so I had 3 major cities in 1 week, that’s cool!
In the evening I played soccer on a syntetic field, cinqo – cinqo again, I really love it, tomorrow we play again.

I also realised the last couple of weeks how expensive Costa Rica is! This is not what I expected, so here’s a little list of expensive things:
·         Cereal: €4 for 1 pack
·         Normal white bread:  €4 kilo
·         Mobile phones: Iphone: €800, other smartphones a little less, the cheap phones which can’t do a lot are still €100
·         All other electronics as well
·         Shampoo €8-12 for a bottle
·         Deoderant €4 for 1 bottle

But ofcourse there is also a lot of cheap things:
·         Coffee, €10 for a kilo, this is the best supermarket coffee, not whole beans.
·         Oreo’s!
·         All fruit, especially in Orotina.
·         Cigarettes €2 for a pack of 20 cigarettes, but I don’t smoke, so for me not important J
·         The barbershop, or whatever the name is for the people who cut your hair, is only €3 but I found a free spot!

                                         Day 47, Jeuves 30 agosto 2012 22:33
Volunteering!
Today at school I had spanish exam and maths exam, both went really bad. Furthermore I helped in the schoolcantine by making the sandwiches for that day. Yes that I what you do here in school, helping without getting anything for it, something which will not happen often in Dutch schools I think.
Also I spoke my tourism teacher and she told me that next week we have a project, for tourism. For me it is that I can work 1 week at Carrara national park. I don’t know what this work will be but it is so cool that I can work there! I do have to take the bus at 6 every morning. This evening I played soccer again, it didn'play that good but I did make 3 goals.

Busy weekend, and a music festival!

                                      Day 43, Domingo 26 agosto 2012 20:35
Beach, party & roadtrip weekend.
Pfeeewh it felt so wrong not to write for 3 days, first I was reallt tired and later my adapter was broken, but I’m back! A lot happened last 3 days, I’ll start with Friday.
On Friday I was free of school, so I could sleep long. Later I went to Orotina with my hostdad, we walked around Orotina a little bit.  I bought a ball and some other stuff I needed. Later I went to the restaurant where it was free cappuchino day! Buy one, and get one for free. There I drank a few cappuchino´s talked with my barista friend and skyped with Frida. Later in the day I went running with Ruth to Dixie´s house again, just to show Ruth where it is.  Friday night wasn’t that exciting, my classmates didn’t want to go rollerskating, but we go next Friday J.
Saturday was a way more exciting day, I went with my hostdad to Jaco, the beachcity to do some stuff, and also ofcourse to go to the beach. It’s so lovely to swim in the waves, but it also made me realise that I really have to find a swimming team! Later on the day I met 6 friends of the exchange program, it was really really good to see them again! I spent some quality time with them. I couldn’t stay that long with them because there was a party waiting at home. When I got home there was no party yet, but 2 hours later there was. It was an ‘El Clasico’ viewing party, Liga vs. Saprissa, most people were Saprissa but I’m Liga! It ended in an exciting 2-2. The party contineud till 2:30 and most people stayed over to sleep here, so the house was crowded.
On Sunday I had a meeting with all the students in my area, but only half showed up. But again it was really good to see my friends again. Takeisha and her family invited me to go with them to some village. The village was pretty far away so we made a little roadtrip and stopped some times at interesting places. This roadtrip was really cool because all the time when you look out of the window you see rainforest everywhere, and with the clouds it looked even better. It the village there was a huge traditional Costa Rican, cart which are always hand-painted and stuff, it was cool. And on our way back we ate at Taco Bell :D they really have to bring the restaurant to the Netherlands!
Right now we are watching the Voice of Mexico, like every Sunday and later we will watch a movie, I feel good now!

                                  Day 44, Monday 27 augustus 2012 22:00
Music Festival!
Today I went with school to a music festival in Alejeula were some of my classmates had to perform. They made really cool music, everything kind of expermimental. We didn’t win the first round which was just instrumental. During the break we went to KFC and the school paid J. The second round, with singing was even better, but we didn’t win again. Everybody was kind of sad because we didn’t win but I enjoyed it anyway!

Tranquillo, that's the way of living here!

                                        Day 35, Sabado 18 agosto 2012 22:18
Talking is key
I dreamed about home for the first time this night. I dreamed about our kitchen how my mom and dad removed the old kitchen and built the old one again. We had an new coffee machine and I was making coffee but didn’t know how to make it. It felt really good to dream about home in such a normal way. I don’t know what dreams mean, but it felt really positive!
Today was a really good day! In the morning I walked with my host mom, host dad and Glenda, the girlfriend of my big brother to a hotel. We walked 2,5 kilometer to the hotel. The walk made me think of home because we did these kind of walks as well on holidays. We only went to the hotel to watch it. The hotel looked like a paradise, there were perfect grass fields, with palm trees and fruit trees. There were wooden cabins where people sleep in, some cool wooden bars / restaurants and 4 pools, 1 with slides and stuff. It looked very cool and stuff but it costs €80 a night to sleep there. After viewing this whole park we rested at the pool and watch people going down to slides. It costs €8 to go to the pool, but it wasn’t that great, I’d rather find a 25 meter pool. We found a very cool fruit tree in the hotel park and we picked these fruits to make lemonade with it for later, pretty cool J.
When we got home we didn’t do that much, played a little bit soccer, watched some tv. Then it was time for me to make my homework, I have to write a report about the trip I went on 2 weeks ago to the national park and I need to describe 8 species of animals I found there. All in Spanish, pretty hard! That’s something what was not on my expectation list, learning stuff. But having tourism 27 hours a week in school I think this sure is good, I learn about ecotourism, animals, presentation and tourism overall. I’m half way this report and tomorrow I do the other half. Also I have to learn for exams because to next 2 weeks I have exams almost every day. And I do want to do good on these exams.
Also I talked a little bit more with my host mom today. I wrote down the things I wanted to talk about, like how I don’t like that they talk about the other exchange students they had a lot and that I want to do stuff and some other stuff how family works here. This talk and the talk we had 2 days ago were very important for me. It gives me better sight into this family and this culture. Now I know a lot more about how stuff works here and that makes adaption a lot easier. I think after this 2 conversation I can finally start enjoying my time here to the fullest!
Also I thought of more funny / weird /different in things Costa Rica:
·         Tico’s listen to either Reggea, Metal or Church music.
·         When passing a church they make a cross on the chest.
·         Mexico is the major country in middle America, a lot is based on Mexico and almost everything on the television are Mexican soaps, they are really bad. There are always people fighting, crying, or at a funeral.
·         Every night there are deadly accident and drug liquidations on the news.
·         My head goes crazy, I think in Spanish, Dutch and English at the same time, it’s amazing how fast that changes.
·         Everybody says that I learn Spanish really fast and good :D
·         Every morning at the bus stop there’s a policeman to help the little children cross the road.
·         On the television there is a lot of propaganda, about the president and country.
·         Everybody I just met tells me to watch out for people I don’t know, kind of ironic.
·         Big amounts of money are said in U.S. dollars and not in Costa Rica colones.
·         People often say ‘pesos’ instead of colones, or the color of the money.
·         In school if you answer right people clap for you.
·         We sleep very earlier on week days, I go to sleep between 21:00 and 22:00 and wake up at 6:00.
·         If I sleep late in weekends it’s till 10:00.
·         The difference between women and men is bigger here.
And these are just a few minor culture differences, so understand that I have a pretty hard time adapting to this culture, but I will push through! I didn’t expect of myself that I would write everyday on my blog but I do and I hope I will go on with it probably I will because it also became my diary, the blog is censored by the way.

                                    Day 36,  Domingo 19 agosto 2012 21:36
Family renewed
Today was the first day after I talked everything out with my hostmom. Everything felt different,  way more natural. Like saying ‘buenas dias’ not because it’s a custom but because you mean it. I went to the restaurant to Skype with some people and look up information for my report about the trip to the national park 2 weeks ago. It was pretty hard for me but I made it! An 1100 words report about the importance of the park and the biological center and the explanation of 5 species living there, all in Spanish! Tomorrow I have to do an presentation about it and I have an exam in Civica, still not sure what it is but I think it’s with the law and stuff. I had a half lesson in this so that exam is going to be awesome!
Furthermore I went jogging today and of course like every Sunday evening watching ‘Voz… Mexico’ The Voice of Mexico. Also I looked up the information about the qualifications of FIFA world cup 2014. Costa Rica has to place first or second in this group with Mexico, El Salvador and Guyana, right now we’re second and 6 more matches to play but I think we will pass this round. After this round the next round is in 1 group with probably: Mexico, USA, Canada, Jamaica, Honduras and Costa Rica, in that group we have to place with the best 4. I really hope Costa Rica plays in the world cup, that would be sooo cool. 7 September is the next match against Mexico I hope there will be viewing parties here the same as in The Netherlands.
And today just felt really good within the family, the whole vibe changed. I now have conversations with the other family member and feel a little bit more part of the family!
Also I checked the statistics of my blog today, most pageviews are from The Netherlands, like 60% second comes Russia with 20% and third Costa Rica with 10%. Furthermore its Germany, Belgium, France, Servia, Bosnia and Canada. Also most links are from Facebook but also from Stumble Upon and some 18+ websites.. really weird statistics but very cool aswell! Also my blog almost has 10.000 words! Right now it 23 pages with 9.820 words! I really like doing it and I will keep on doing it!

                                           Day 36, Lunes 20 agosto 2012 21:16
In the Netherlands you hear the thunder, in Costa Rica you feel it!
A few weeks ago I was writing about finding my rhythm here in Costa Rica, and I think today was one of the first days in my rhythm J. I woke up after a deep sleep, with 1 nightmare and a few scary minutes being awake in the Costa Rica darkness. It’s really dark in Costa Rica, mostly because there are no streetlights or something.
At school we worked a little in tourism class about some weird snake/salamanders. The school didn’t had water today so everything was a little bit weird, you couldn’t go to the bathroom or anything and lunch was 30 minutes  late. Tomorrow there’s again no water so only school till 11! Yesterday I spoke with Frida who always goes to school from 7 to 12, yeah that’s different as 7 to 4.. but I like my school! In the afternoon I had my first Costa Rican exam, it was civica, don’t know how to say it but it’s like social studies, but that’s also a subject here, very confusing! Anyways, the exam wasn’t that hard but I couldn’t answer everything though. Exams are also pretty different, we sat in a normal classroom, (normal is 3 walls and 1 ‘openwall’ with just steel bars) but everybody is talking, phones ring all the time, also of the teacher. The teachers switch pretty often and the teacher explains during the test. I’ll see the results soon!
At home I just chilled, ‘tranquillo’. There was really heavy rain and thunder, 1 time the thunder was so heavy you could feel it! The electricity shut down a couple times as well. Also I read some of the stuff EF give me, like handbooks and stuff that really gives a boost to my ways of thinking here!

                                        Day 38, Martes21 agosto 2012 22:12
Family time!
After the talks last week a lot got better, today I finally did a lot with my family! In school I only had 1 English exam which I finished in 10 minutes. The exam started at 9:30 but I was at school at 7:00, as always. In The Netherlands this would’ve been impossible for me, but I like being in school here with my friends. Today I heard howler monkeys in school! Also I spent 1 hour in the school lunchroom talking with the cooks, 4 typical school cafeteria women. I don’t know why movies and series always make this people look bad, they are so nice! They gave me free coffee and a sandwich with meat, and we talked about Costa Rican and Dutch food, 1 of them invited me to go to the beach with her family a few weeks later, and some other teacher invited me to go to Guanacaste with her, really cool!
After school I went to the bank to make a deposit to EF, I felt kinda weird to give my money to the bank since I only know internet banking. After making the deposit I waited with Pete for my host mom and we went home by bus, while talking about stuff, it feels really good to have conversations with my family! At home I danced (!) with my host sister and mom to Bob Marley, really funny!
Also I ate a lot of vegetables today, for breakfast there was like a double-clapped tortilla with beans inside, lunch was rice with beans, other beans and carrot, and dinner was the same. Maybe I will like all food when I come back, because I wouldn’t have ate this at home! Also I drank 5 cups of black coffee today so I hope I can sleep, but the coffee is just damn good!

                                        Day 40, Jeuves 22 agosto 2012 20:19

Yesterday I didn’t write because I was to tired. That day I didn’t do a lot special, except for watching soccer at my big bro’s house.
Today I didn’t do a lot either. I had only biology in school so I was done early, after staying in school 1 more hout with friends, after the classes were done I went home. In the Netherlands we directly went home when the classes enden, an other difference. At home I watched Barcelona-Real Madrid alone because everybody was gone, I wished I watched at someone’s house. Later I went jogging to Dixie’s house, both the Dixie’s are really nice and live in a cool area, with spiders monkeys, a lot of mango trees and an amazing view! Tomorrow I have a free day, so I might go to the river!

Talking is key, 2 very important days!

Viernes 17 agosto 2012 21:34
Think, think, think…
1 of the reasons why I came to Costa Rica was to think, think about what I wanted to do after this year for kind of study and other stuff. Today I thought a lot about a lot of things. I spent almost 2 hours in sitting in garden thinking about stuff.
I thought about me changing class 2 years ago to an easier level, how I think this was one of the best choices in my life, because otherwise I might not be here. But also I thought that it really sucks because I think I can make the top level in my school and be able to go to university, which now is really hard to get in to. I want to use my brains and learn stuff. This is something I could’ve never said 2 years ago.
Also I thought about how different school is here, I have 3 days a week tourism and I really love it. I have to do a presentation every day I have tourism. Today it was about rural tourism in The Netherlands, a dew fays ago about the metamorphoses of a frog. But besides that school is really different, the vibe is just different. The teachers are your friends, not your enemies. Everything is ‘tranquillo’ relaxed and easy. Things like bullying and loners don’t exist in my school, some schools should take this as an example!
Also I thought about family, and how it is really hard to adjust to a new family. And how families work in different country.
Most important is I thought about what I gave up for this year, and that I don’t want to give that all up for nothing, I want to have the year of my life but that means I have to try hard and do the best I can. While looking through my photos of the beach I saw this photo:                     I became philosophical and came up with the following sentence:
An exchange year abroad is like sitting on a rock in the sea,  you enjoy it but you never know when there’s a big wave coming to knock you down and slam you on the rocks.

Sunday morning skype
Today I started with celebrating my host mom a happy mother’s day, it turned it to be on Wednesday… Mother’s day is a really big day here, everything is already decorated and everything is about mother’s day.
After this little mistake and some breakfast with bread and cream cheese, the cream cheese is good, the bread is pretty bad here. I went to Orotina to skype with home. It is so nice to Skype with them, the guy who invented this deserves a medal! Skyping doesn’t make me feel homesick, maybe it will later but right now I just enjoy having contact, seeing the house and talking to everybody. On Saturday a host student from Ecuador arrived in my house in Holland, I’m not sad that I’m not there because I’m glad I’m here but I liked to meet the new family member as well, maybe I get to meet her at the end of the year.
When I went to walk back to the house I looked at the clouds and I figured it was going to rain, and it did 250 metres before I reached my house the it started raining like crazy and within 2 minutes I was soaked again. It rained really hard for like 3 hours really crazy really cool.
I should’ve gone to play soccer today but because it was raining not many people could come and it would be very expensive to play, because you have to rent the soccer hall, the less people, the more money it costs. So instead I watched the Olympic closing ceremony which was really really cool! I am so jealous of all the people who participated! It also made me miss waterpolo already. I didn’t see any of the waterpolo, instead there were some weird sports which I never thought would exsist.
1 thing that drives me crazy it that I currently think in 3 languages, Dutch, English and even in Spanish. Pretty annoying, but most of the thinking is in English. Because of the camp we had my English got way better, and also my german a little bit!

                                                       Lunes 13 agosto 2012 22:19
Run til you drop
Today I realised I really like my school. I had turismo all day, we had to prepare a presentation about frogs. Everybody got to do 2 frogs. I like this better as normal classes, I now know a little bit more about frogs but I also practiced my Spanish a lot. Doing the presentation in Spanish was kinda hard but I think I did it pretty good, and everybody was clapping and stuff because I did it in Spanish J.
After 9 hours sitting in school I had a lot of energy so I decided to go running. I ran with Ruth and I think I ran around 10 kilometres on k-weggetjes (bad roads). I ran till I dropped litterly, at home I dropped on my bed of exhaustion.

                                                                                              Martes 14 agosto 2012 22:11
New friends!
Today I had English and maths for the first time, English was very easy I just talked with the teacher for 1,5 hour. Maths looked really hard but it was pretty easy. In the time we didn’t had class we build a cool house of cards.
After school I met with Dixie and Dixie, daughter and mother who I met in Orotina. They were really nice and asked if I wanted to come to their house for dinner, I accepted immediately. They live pretty rural but have an amazing view and a very good house. We ate really nice fried chicken and I ate bread with the best butter I have ever tasted, they were very very nice. While eating some watermelon the neighbour brought suddenly there was sitting a huge tarantula beside me! The neighbour just shoved it away with a napkin, pretty cool experience!

Jeuves agosto 2012 21:34
Probably the most important day while in Costa Rica.
Yesterday I went to the beach again with Ruth. In the morning I washed all the dishes because it was mothersday and at 8 we took the bus to Jaco. The waves were really cool and we spent the first 2,5 hour in the sea. After that we walked to this amazing river where the water goes from the sea into the river instead from the river into the sea. We had to cross this river but it was pretty so I carried our bags above my head. We made some very nice pictures of the river with Ruth her super camera. Close to the river was another small beach with a lot of rocks but it looked like paradise with a little hut included. I wanted a picture on the rocks with the waves behind me. I decided I wanted 1 more photo but then a huge wave came and knocked me of my seat and slammed me on some rocks, my wrist was bleeding pretty bad and I think my thumb is kind of messed up but it’s okey.
After we had lunch at a pandaria we went to the beach again the chill a little. Some guys asked if I wanted to play soccer and I didn’t say no to that. It were Nicaraguans, we were told they were not very good people here in Costa Rica but they were nice. One guy also lived in Orotina a few years ago. He went swimming with us at low tide which is very cool. He told his grandfather was chefkok at a good restaurant in Jaco and he works there as well, he said next time we came here we could have free dinner at the restaurant! :D.
When we said goodbye and stuff we went to the bus station to go home. After 10 minutes the bus came but it didn’t stop for us, it just slowed down and went on. I have really bad words for that busdriver because he was the last bus because it was mothersday, and it was just 19:00. We asked around 10 people about what time the next bus went to Orotina and everybody said something different, even the police was very wrong. Finally we asked a busdriver and he said there were no more busses. That was really bad because now we were stuck in Orotina. Our IEC called us and asked what was going, he was very nice and a friend of him could taxi us for ‘only’ 20.000 colones, €40. That was better as a taxi which costs around €80. But still it is a lot of money just because the bus didn’t stop for us. When we came home I was really tired and didn’t write my blog.

Today I apologized to my hostmom about yesterday because yesterday she was already sleeping. She was still kind of mad which I can understand but it was not all my fault, but I didn’t want to argue about it.
School was really cool today because my Spanish is going pretty good so I can talk more with my classmates. I really like school now! I had chemistry for the first time, I thought I would be really because I only had it for 1 year 3 years ago. But I was not that hard and I said the teacher was wrong one time and I was right so everybody was clapping again J. Also I spoke to the gym teacher and I can join the soccer team! I  don’t know what to expect of the soccer team but next week I can play in a match!
When I got home things went really weird. First you need to know that I wasn’t feeling that good the last days and I was thinking about changing family. So when I got home I went to talk with my hostmom about how things can be better and how I can be more a part of the family. When we talked for 2 minutes she suddenly said that I needed to change host family. I was pretty shocked and didn’t see this coming. But because I was kind of in between 2 choices, changing or not changing I felt relieved somewhere as well because the choice was made.  But also I felt really bad because they didn’t want me anymore and I felt a lot more and it was a really weird feeling. I didn’t really get why she said it. After a few more words I went to my room to be alone for a while. I contacted some friends and home about it. Half an hour later my host mom came into my room to talk more. She said she didn’t want me to change, I still don’t know why she said it in the first place. But we had the conversation I wanted to have for a long time. It was really hard because I just made peace with me changing family and now my mom was trying to talk my out of it. She told about how the family works and what I can do better. Also she explained some cultural differences which are really important to know. I figured out that the way I was trying to make things better only made things worse. I was trying to make things better by making my own breakfast and helping with dinner and stuff. She told me that in Costa Rica that just is the task of the mom and that the man just don’t do so much in the house. Also she told me what she appreciated about me and what she expects from me. It was a really good conversation and I changed my mind about changing family. I am really happy I had this conversation because now I feel a lot better but there is still more to talk about.
